Osaka

Long known as the Kitchen of Japan, Osaka is situated on Osaka Bay and is the second largest city in Japan. Its Kansai International Airport located on a manmade island in the bay offers foreign visitors an optional point of entry to that of Haneda and Narita Airports in Tokyo. A nice bonus if flying into Kansai is that you can hop on the Haruka Limited Express train directly to central Osaka or on to Kyoto. So if Kyoto is on your itinerary, you can skip Tokyo and shave a lot of travel time getting to Osaka or Kyoto.

Being a major city, Osaka boasts many of the same things as Tokyo, but the area around Dotonbori is unique in Japan. The most energizing time to visit this mecca of street food along the Dotonbori River is in the evening when the multi-colored signs illuminate the night. There’s no other place like it on Earth.

But Osaka isn’t all about food. It has theme parks, the dominating Osaka Castle, and some quirky museums such as the Osaka City Sewerage Museum, yes a museum dedicated to showcasing sewage treatment. Don’t laugh it off. Its actually pretty cool.

So be sure to watch our videos on Osaka as we uncover the hidden less touristy places of this amazing city (which was home to my wife for 18 years).
