One of the most beautiful places in Japan is found on Hokkaido, Japan’s northern main island. We visit Hakodate the island’s second largest city behind Sapporo. Hakodate was one of the first ports to open to the west, and today is a popular cruise ship destination full of history and beautiful scenery. Japan is known for hot springs spas, also known as onsen towns, and Gero is considered as the best or one of the very best. We visit this amazingly friendly and delightful town located in the Hida Valley between Nagoya and Takayama. It makes for a great day trip or overnight stay. Explore the historic Gassho Mura with its Shirakawago houses and indulge in one of the many sweets shops scattered throughout the town. We’ve not come across another town in Japan with so many specialty sweets.

Explore the Japan Alps and Nagano in this video from someone who grew up living there every summer. Nagano is convenient to get to from Tokyo on the shinkansen and is home to one of Japan’s three most famous templese: Zenkoji Temple. Just outside Nagano are the Japan Alps and little known town of Togakushi with its amazing shrines and national parks. Then there is Lake Nojiri for stunning scenery looking up at Mt. Myoko and Mt. Kurohima with the stunning Naena Falls nearby. Best of all, this place is off the beaten path and not covered up with tourists.
