On June 8th of last year, we published our first video on our visit to Takayama. With no experience in video production or editing, and having never uploaded anything to YouTube, we took the plunge and launched Uncharted Japan on YouTube. Its been quite the journey. Yesterday we uploaded our anniversary video: One Year In Japan! Please enjoy!
We’ve visited Japan five times since April of last year to capture video content for our videos and today we have over 60 videos on the channel, and as of this writing are at 4,995 subscribers. From conversations with various experts and more seasoned “Youtubers”, we’re told our channel has done remarkably well for an upstart in such a niche category (off the beaten path places of Japan). Most channels never reach 1,000 subscribers, and if they do, it sometimes takes years.
We’ve had some amazing experiences and even more so, we’ve had nearly 1,200 comments on the videos, of which 99.99% have been overwhelmingly positive such as this one: “Found your videos last week and have been binge watching. We are visiting in July and have changed our itinerary to incorporate the less crowded places you suggested.” Or “This channel is an absolute gem!” Having been recognized in person while in Japan has been a fun experience as well, not that anyone has ever asked for an autograph.
We appreciate all who watch and share our channel. We hope to continue the journey another year, but bills must be paid, and Youtube simply doesn’t cover it. Its been a labor of love. So the frequency of video uploads will be scaled back as I return to my former career of real estate.
We’ll still be here to answer questions and provide ideas via future videos, so we aren’t giving up. But its important that viewers share our channel so that hopefully it can grow into a viable, sustainable endeavor. Thank you for one amazing year!
