Hiroshima is one of the more popular destinations in Japan, and for good reason. Of course there’s its unique history with the atomic bomb drop on August 5, 1945 which is memorialized at the Hiroshima Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Dome. Then there’s the iconic “floating” tori Gate off the shores of Miyajima Island and the ropeway to the top of the island. But beyond these top attractions, an excellent day trip from Hiroshima is that of a visit to the smaller town of Higashihiroshima.
While in a taxi one day in Hiroshima, we mentioned to the driver that we were getting on the train to Higashihiroshima and he asked “Why would we want to go there?”, because as he said “there’s nothing there to see or do”. We’re glad we didn’t heed his advice and went along instead.
Its just a 30+/- minute train ride from Hiroshima Station and what we found was a delightful place to explore. The town is best known for its seven sake breweries which all happen to be clustered in one area close to Saijo Station. Therefore, after a very short walk, we found ourselves wandering through the streets and alleys of white washed warehouses and sake breweries. It was a delightful experience.
